Blogging can earn money, but it is a slow business, not a shortcut. Most blogs that earn solve a clear problem for a specific audience over a long time. Here is the realistic path.

From my own work: I run blogs on my own sites and have helped clients prepare for AdSense review. The sites that earn have original, useful content and clean, fast pages; thin or copied content gets rejected.
1. Choose a niche you can serve
Pick a topic where you have experience or can learn quickly, readers have real problems and there are ways to earn. Narrow beats broad: “WordPress security for small businesses” beats “technology”.
2. Set up your blog
Use WordPress on reliable hosting with your own domain (step-by-step guide). Add About, Contact and Privacy Policy pages, a light theme and only the plugins you need.
3. Publish helpful content
- Write for real questions (keyword research).
- Add your own experience, examples and screenshots; do not copy or merely rewrite others.
- Cite sources and keep posts updated.
- Publish steadily, for example one strong post a week.
4. Get traffic
Combine SEO (basics), communities and an email list, and measure with GA4 and Search Console.
5. Ways to earn
| Method | How it works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Display ads | Google AdSense pays for views and clicks | Follow AdSense policies; never click your own ads or ask others to |
| Affiliate marketing | Commission on purchases through your link | Disclose clearly (FTC guidance) |
| Services | Freelance or consulting work from readers | Often the fastest income |
| Digital products | Guides, templates, courses | Needs an audience first |
What to expect
There is no reliable timeline or income figure, and many blogs earn little in the first months. Treat year one as building assets: content, trust and an audience. Services and affiliate income usually come before meaningful ad revenue. See also making money with AI tools.
Mistakes to avoid
- Mass-producing low-quality or copied articles.
- Chasing every topic instead of one niche.
- Ignoring speed, mobile layout and trust pages.
- Buying traffic or links, which can get you banned from ad programs.

FAQ
How much can a blog make?
It varies enormously and nothing is guaranteed; income depends on niche, quality, traffic and monetisation.
Is a free platform enough?
To start, yes, but your own WordPress site gives control and more monetisation options.
Do I need to show my face?
No, but showing who you are and your experience builds trust.
